City of Salem Police Station
Aligning Values
Systems West was brought on to commission the City of Salem Police Station project, largely due to the strong relationship we built with the Owner’s Representative and positive past performance on a very challenging project. In addition, our values and the City of Salem’s values aligned effortlessly. The City places a high priority on the community’s well-being and the need for an upgraded police station was imperative as issues of crime and homelessness were always on their radar. At Systems West, we take pride in supporting our community and strive to enhance the communities in which we live, work, and play.
Complexity and Collaboration
It was crucial to integrate packaged rooftop units and packaged control systems with the building automation system. This required troubleshooting and collaboration with the controls contractor as well as the equipment manufacturer’s representative to ensure it functioned seamlessly. The station was constructed during wildfire season when smoke made its way up the Willamette Valley. Collaboration was critical to protect the systems and make sure they were not run prematurely, as it could pull smoke into the building and potentially harm the interior.
Working alongside the contractors and subcontractors was very positive. The entire team came together to make it a successful project and, with such unique spaces, it was rewarding to see a large and complicated project completed. During late phases, our lead field technician worked with city maintenance staff to go over the installed systems and provide the training and knowledge they need to operate them. Since it was a new building, they were adamant about learning each system inside and out. The new facility allows the police department to function more efficiently by bringing together many important police functions that were once located off-site in separate buildings. Functions and spaces included a lobby, evidence storage, shooter simulation, gym, and locker rooms.
