Salem Public Works Operations Center

A Beacon of Unity and Sustainability

The Salem Public Works Operations Headquarters stands as a symbol of unity and progress for the city, serving as the newest hub for multiple city departments. More than just a structure, it embodies collaboration, innovation, and sustainability, breaking down barriers between fieldworkers and office staff to enhance communication and coordination. This design strengthens the city’s ability to respond to emergencies, including wildfires, flooding, and ice storms.

Building on our relationship with the City of Salem and our collaboration with the project management group Compass, Systems West Engineers played a key role in this project. We commissioned advanced MEP systems for the 50,000-square-foot, two-story office building, including energy-efficient HVAC units, a comprehensive building automation system, and renewable energy solutions. The all-electric, Net-Zero-ready mechanical system and solar power generation contribute to the state’s first-of-its-kind local microgrid.

Creating a Collaborative and Efficient Workplace

The building’s layout maximizes natural daylight, creating an adaptable and collaborative environment where employees can control their workspaces, fostering pride and productivity. The facility, visible from 23rd Avenue, accommodates both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, with public areas thoughtfully separated from operational spaces. It houses the Public Works Department Operations Division, Engineering Division, and part of the Administration Division, offering offices, lab spaces, locker rooms, conference rooms, and a large training area for over 250 employees.

Systems West Engineers is proud to have contributed to a project that not only meets the City’s operational needs but also exemplifies sustainability, equity, and community well-being.
